Setting up Spam Filters with Outlook Express

The govital mail servers will automatically detect confirmed SPAM messages and change the subject line to include the word *SPAM*. This way you don't have to waste your time with messages that were detected by the filter as SPAM.

If you are happy with our anti-spam system, you can follow this procedure to have Outlook Express not show you those messages, thus saving you even more time.

This short tutorial will guide you on how to set up custom filters in Outlook Express, as to filter spam into a designated spam folder, or straight to the trash. Begin with Outlook Express open, and follow the steps below

1. (Optional) First, create a folder where the spam will go for review to check for false-positives (Messages that were accidentally marked as spam, but are not) before being deleted. If you do not wish to review the spam, and wish for the spam to go straight to the trash, this step is not needed.

Creating a new Folder

Choose File -> New -> Folder... from the menu and enter the name of the folder (Usually something like "SPAM", as in our example) and click OK.

The folder is now created!

2. Next, we are going to set up the filter. Choose Tools -> Message Rules -> Mail... from the menu to bring up the Message Rules window.

3. Click "New.." in the top right corner to Bring up the "New Mail Rule" window.

4. In this window, you will want to select the "When the subject line contains specific words" option and the "Move it to a selected folder option". Once they are selected, click on the blue "contains specific words" text in the bottom panel to edit what text will set off the filter, and cause the rule to be invoked.

5. In the "Type Specific Words" window, type the word "**SPAM**" including the leading and trailing stars (But not the quotation marks). Click add, and then click OK.

6. Next, back in the "New Mail Rule" window, click on the blue "Move it to the specified folder". In the "Move" window, select the designated junk mail folder you created in step 1. If you choose to skip the step and want it to go straight to the trash, simply choose the "Deleted Items" folder.

7. Finally, click OK and the mail filter is now set up!
