Dial-Up Networking Setup for Windows XP

This step-by-step procedure will get you configured to use your Windows XP computer with the dial-up networking services provided as part of your govital subscription. You will need to have a hardware modem installed in your computer, and that modem connected to the telephone line before you can make a connection.

While connected to the Internet, you will not be able to receive calls on the telephone line that you are using for dial-up networking.

Step 1:

From the Windows desktop, left-click on the StartControl Panel. Once the Control Panel window is open, double click on Network Connections.

Step 2:

If your start-menu has been set to .Classic Mode. it will appear similar to the picture below. If this is the case, click on Settings then click on Network Connections.

Step 3:

In the Control Panel window, click on Network and Internet Connections. Under "Pick a task..." click on Set up or change your Internet connection. In the Internet Properties window, click on the Connections tab, then click on the Add button.

Step 4:

In the New Connection Wizard window, select the Dial-up to private network button, then click Next >. Choose Set up my connection manually by clicking in the circle next to it. Then, click on the Next button. Type govital into the ISP Name entry box. Then click on the Next button to continue. Type the phone number 2539992 and click Next. Now enter the same govital username and password that was given to you when you activated the account.

Remember to enter both the username and password in all lower case (small letters); it does make a difference. Then, check just the first two checkboxes below. Once this is complete, click on the Next button.

If you have call waiting from Bell, please enter *70,2539992 for the telephone number.

Step 5:

Click on the Finish button to complete the internet setup and save the new settings. Double click on the Control Panel. Double click on the Internet Options icon. In the address field type http://www.govital.net (If you have Internet Explorer 4 or higher. Click OK. Now you are ready to setup your E-mail.

Step 6:

Now you will be configuring your e-mail. To configure Outlook Express E-mail, follow the following steps. In this example, assume your govital user name is username and your password is abcxyz.

Your e-mail address is then username@govital.net. Replace username and abcxyz in this procedure with the actual values that were given to you when you signed up.

Step 7:

Start Outlook Express from the Start menu, or click on the Mail icon in Internet Explorer. Click on Tools and then Accounts. Click on the Mail tab. Click on the Add button. Click on the Mail item.

Step 8:

Enter your Full Name as the Display Name. This is the name that will be on the e-mail that you send to others. Click on Next. Enter your e-mail address provided by govital. This should be username@govital.net. Click on Next.

Step 9:

Make sure the incoming mail server is type POP3. Enter mail.govital.net for the Incoming POP3 and Outgoing SMTP server. Click Next. Enter your username as the POP account name. Upper or lower case matters. Please double check your username as you type it. Also enter your assigned password. Again, upper and lower case matters. Click Next.

Step 10:

Enter mail.govital.net as the friendly internet mail account name. Click on the type of Internet Connection you have: Connect using my phone line. Click Next. Click on the Finish button. Click Close to get back to the main Outlook Express window.
